Background: The main advantages of HDMI, high definition multimedia interface, over standard analog video transmission is that it is 100 % digital from source to display. However, transmitting HDMI over long distances is not so easy. In this article we will describe some of the issues encountered during HDMI transmission and present a solution that can significantly improve HDMI transmission: the HDMI Extender.Basic HDMI transmission characteristics:HDMI is based on TMDS, transmission minimized differential signaling, developed by Silicon Image. In order to support non-compressed HD video quality, HDMI needs to support data rates up to ~1.65 Gbps for each of 3 transmission pairs. In addition, TMDS is based on a characteristic impedance of 50 Ohms ( 100 ohms differential).The math of HDMI signaling:Although TMDS is a base-band “digital†signal, mathematically it can be thought of as a summation of harmonically related sine waves. The great French mathematician, Jean Baptiste Fourier (1768-1830), showed that any signal waveform including a square wave (think digital here) could be resolved into a summation of harmonically related sine waves. As the data rate of a digital signal increase, so does the frequency of the individual sine waves that make up the “composite†digital signal. For example, for a 50% duty cycle perfect square wave, the fundamental frequency (lowest frequency component) is ½ of the data rate. In summary, a digital signal is simply composed of the fundamental frequency sine wave and harmonics of this fundamental sine wave. The amplitude of the individual sine waves is determined by Fourier transforms.The challenges of HDMI signaling over long cables:
Transmitting high-speed HDMI signals is not easy because the frequency of the individual sine waves is such high frequency. As frequencies of the signal increase, the design of a good HDMI transmission product falls in the realm of good RF/microwave engineering. The challenges of high-speed digital transmission can be broken down to :Attenuation: as frequencies increase, signal attenuation of the cables increases due to the “skin effect.†Essentially, the “skin effect†describes the phenomena that as the frequency of a sine wave increase, the wave tends to travel on the outer portions of the cable conductor. Whereas ordinary 60Hz AC signal might travel through the entire cross sectional area of the conductor, a high frequency may only travel along the outer edges of the conduct therefore the “impedance†to signal travel is greater. Think of this as a water pipe where the center of the pipe is blocked and fluid can only travel on the outer edges of the pipe. In addition, the attenuation of a cable increases with the cable length.Intra-signal pair skew: recall that higher frequency sine wave also have shorter wavelengths. HDMI is based on differential signaling, therefore the “skew†( any delay between a transmission pair ) of each the signal must be minimized. Any differences in trace/cable lengths will tend to skew the arrival time of the signal to the receiver. As frequencies and cable lengths increase, the errors will be more pronounced.Impedance matching: : HDMI is based on 50-Ohm ( 100 ohm differential) impedance. All cables, traces must be matched to this characteristic impedance. Any “mis-match†causes reflections, which degrades transmission performance.Using a HDMI extender to mitigate transmission problems over long cables:In many front projection installation where cable lengths are significant, the problems described above will surface in the form of “pixelization†or even a complete picture drop out. An external HDMI Extender can be used in order to correct and compensate for the long cables that causes the impairments. The HDMI Extender automatically adjust and compensate for cable attenuation up to 40 dB. In addition, an adaptive equalizer compensates for the time-based skews. A limiting amp “squares “ up and re-shapes the input signal before sending to the output through output buffers.The HDMI Extender is low power and can be attached to the display end ( after the long cable) to completely rectify any errors caused by transmission over long HDMI cables. The extender is housed in a small ease to use package. Power can be supplied directly from the HDMI source, however an external AC adapter is provided and recommended. The HDMI Extender can be used with DVI-D products simply by using a HDMI to DVI-D cable or adapter.Conclusion:HDTV technology is changing rapidly. HD connections such as HDMI will become the de facto standard in HDTV connections. Transmitting HDMI signals over long cables is a challenge and often causes pixelization and signal drop out. Building High Performance Teams

Your managerial success is tied to your team. Teams are the most
valuable resource of an organization. The times of lone
leadership are over with Alexander the Great. These are the
times of the team leadership. If you can build a successful team
and work as the leader who is just a little more equal than
others you may be able to pull off everything you do with great
success.
Successful team building requires a lot of focus and effort.
Here are a few tips to build teams that are effective and
deliver results.
Define the Objectives: Does the team members understand clearly
the expectations from them? Have the performance challenges
clearly been defined? Do they know what the expected outcomes
are? If there is a misunderstanding on the results expected from
each member as well as that of the team, you may as well write
off the team. Great Team + Challenging Objective = Extraordinary
Results.
Define the vision: The teams realize that they may be able to
survive only by delivering the bottom line results. However they
need something more than the key results defined to them. They
need a vision, something higher than profits and results. A
higher ideal fires up the team's creativity and passion.
Empower to Create Ownership: Empower your team to be independent
decision makers to accomplish tasks and team objectives while
defining their boundaries. Empowered teams and members carry out
its objectives faster as they do not need to wait for the leader
to decide for them. Empowered teams own up their responsibility.
Train, Train and Train Some More: A leader has a large stake in
the success of each team member. Members of teams require
different skills and the leader needs to be a trainer rather
than a driver. Identify skill gaps in soft as well as areas of
expertise and keep training them to produce better results.
Fostering Right Interpersonal Relationships: Make the team
understand that there would be differences. Difference in
gender, culture, thought process and approach to work symbolizes
the dynamic and diverse members who have come together to
achieve common goals. Respecting the difference and valuing
others experience and thoughts enable the team to function with
the right relationships.
Rewards and Compensation: As they say, first share the cash then
the compliments. Everyone talks about the value and benefits of
team work. However benefits to individuals must be clear along
with the benefits to the organization. Set down the right
monetary rewards and incentives for so that the achievement and
benefits for the individuals and organization are balanced.
Lead by Example: A leader always leads from the front. Set
example of discipline, performance orientation putting aside
personal ego to the team's superiority. Give credit to the
others even though you may have contributed more. This nurtures
the right team atmosphere and spirit of togetherness.
Celebrate Success: Finally don't forget to celebrate success. It
must become a habit to celebrate every achievement though small
they may be. Constant celebration boosts the team morale driving
it to perform at higher levels and aim for bigger achievements.
Many of the business cultures and managements celebrate the lone
hero leadership much more than the team leaderships. In the
modern interdependent world it is the teams within the
organizations and multiple teams all collaborating and
contributing to the common corporate objectives that really
differentiate the dynamic growing organizations from the lone
cowboy leaderships that may collapse the moment the leader is
not available to lead.

1. DO allow yourself enough time to make one of your biggest life-altering decisions. Ask yourself why now and why with this person? You should be able to answer this in an affirming and positive way. The relationship should not be reactive to fill an empty space in your life, perhaps a past relationship, a surprise pregnancy, or the absence of family. Lots of people go into a relationship still having baggage from a previous one. If you deal with your previous relationship losses successfully, they won’t come to haunt you or your future spouse later on. Also, keep in mind that opposites attract, but they are really hard to live with. The more in common you have with your spouse, the more likely the relationship will last.2. DO discuss having children and if this is something as a couple you want to do. Also, discuss about how many children you’ll plan to have and when you’ll have them. What parenting practices will you adopt to raise your children? Who will stay at home or will both parties work? You should also define parenting roles as individuals and as a couple.3. DO create a financial plan together. A lot of times people avoid talking about this, but you need to define financial goals and expectations beforehand. Don’t just know how much your future spouse makes, but know the whole picture. Who will be in charge of balancing the checkbook? Will you join your accounts or will they be separate? What are your top financial goals together? People have different spending habits and different financial styles that are often influenced by family. What happens if one spouse starts spending excessively? How will this be handled? Speak with a financial planner and retain one together.4. DO compare personal goals versus goals as a couple and the obstacles that may arise. If one party wants to move to California for a job promotion and the other desires to live near family in Florida, that’s something to discuss now. How will you as a couple make life-altering decisions on which you may not agree? Surely, not all your goals will match that of your partner, but there needs to be decision-making beforehand on how to handle these differences. If one party longs to have children shortly after marrying, while the other wants to wait to start a family and hopes to attend graduate school, this could create tension in the marriage and lead down the road to separation or divorce.5. Poor Performance - Fix it by Coaching

Coaching is about finding out the cause of poor performance
or behaviour and discussing with the team member how to put
it right.The team member might respond immediately to coaching and
improve the situation. However the improvement wont always
be permanent and you may have to do further coaching.When I suggest this to some managers, they see it as some
kind of touchy-feely softly-softly approach. Let me assure
you right now - it's not!

Modern practice is to assume the dad-to-be should be at the birth to offer support. But an increasing number of dads, moms and midwives would prefer he stayed outside.<p><p>Some of the reasons given are:<p><p> Some moms feel the loss of dignity and 'not feeling attractive' is sufficient reason to banish their partners to the corridor.<p><p> Some dads think the sight of baby being born will put them off sex with their partner in the future. Others can't bear to see their partner in pain.<p><p>Researchers at the University of Toronto suggest that women have a happier childbirth if they are supported by a trained woman rather than a stressed father-to-be. This woman could be your mother, a friend who's had a baby of her own or a doula (a professional female birth partner); her presence can have a calming effect on the mom-to-be.<p><p>Most men, however, do want to be present and, after all, the baby is half theirs. Get it right and the man's help can prove to be invaluable and many couples find it is an incredibly bonding experience.<p><p>Advice For Dads:<p><p>Go to the pre-natal classes and learn all you can about the birth, what the mom goes through, and how you can help.<p><p>Your only concern is your partner and the baby. You are there solely for them, and to help them in any way you can. It is difficult finding words of encouragement and it will feel as though your presence is not helping or appreciated - but it is.<p><p>You may see a side of your partner you've never seen before. She may shout at you, even swear at you. Take it, go with the flow, bite your tongue. If you were going through what she's going through you would probably be as bad if not worse! From this particular mark, the archer will again shoot to another mark and again to another. Similar to Clout Archery, ropes or ribbons are used to score the arrows. The scoring system in the Finsbury Mark awards twenty points to arrows that hit the mark exactly, twelve points for arrows that hit within three feet of the mark, seven points for arrows that fall within the next six feet from the three-foot mark and then three points for arrows that fall within the next nine feet off the six-foot mark. The archer with the most points at the end of the marks is declared the winner.Flight ArcheryFlight archery is a competition wherein the winner is declared as the one with the farthest arrow because the score is determined by the sheer distance of the arrow from the shooting line. Temporary Internet Files - the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

A little bit of time invested into learning about internet security can go a long way in preventing mishaps on your computer. Temporary internet files are not something we should be afraid of, but we should certainly be careful in how much we trust them and how we deal with them.Temporary internet files are image, text, and formatting files that are stored on your hard drive by the websites that you visit. They are placed there by the websites without your having to do anything. The files are stored on your computer the first time you visit the site so that the next time you go to that webpage you only have to load new information or files that have changed since the last time you visited - files that have not changed are loaded from the temporary internet files folder at a much faster speed than over the internet.This seems like an incredibly appealing option, especially to those of us still working at home on dial-up connections (my teenage brother-in-law insists I'm "old school" because I don't have DSL - I think he may be right). Storing the temporary internet files on the hard drive significantly cuts down the amount of time it takes to completely load and view a website.There are a few question areas, however, that need to be considered in any discussion about temporary internet files. First, and arguably the most trivial of the concerns, is that you may miss out on all of the updated information the website has to offer. If your browser loads the files from your temporary internet files folder rather than the updated material from the website, you may miss out on an updated football score, or you may get a different image than the one others are viewing. The system is designed so that things like that don't happen, but the possibility is out there.Second, storing huge numbers of files can bog down your computer, slowing down its ability to do even the simplest of tasks, such as word processing (a deadly one-two combination if you're working with dial-up!). Fortunately, you can control the number or size of the files that are being stored on your hard drive. Typically under the Tools>Options menu of your browser you'll be able to set the amount of your hard drive you're willing to dedicate to temporary internet files. You may want to set this high or low, depending on your browsing habits and need for speed.Third, the temporary internet files folder may contain files that contain viruses, inappropriate images or text, and files that could leak personal information to websites. This is obviously a huge concern any time you allow someone virtually unregulated access to your hard drive. Images from an inappropriate website you accidentally stumbled across (it has happened to all of us) may be stored on your hard drive. Corrupted files may be placed there by an unfamiliar website you only visited once. Cookies and other files may potentially spawn popups that cover your screen in a matter of seconds.Before you grab your pitch fork and storm the beast?s castle, let me mention a few things you can do to bring a little control to your temporary internet files folder without destroying it completely.I already mentioned limiting the amount of your hard drive dedicated to holding files from visited websites. This is the best option for those who may be less concerned about corrupted or inappropriate files being stored and more concerned about the ability of their Jurassic-era computer to perform at a decent speed. Some versions of the popular browsers won't allow you to completely eliminate storing files, but you can limit the resources to 1% of your hard drive or a small number of megabytes.Some opt to regularly clean out their temporary internet files folder - obviously this will eliminate malignant files and free up some space for your computer; but it will also eliminate files you may want. A quick note about the files that begin with "Cookie:" - cleaning out the folder will not actually delete the cookies. The cookie files in the temporary internet files folder are simple files that point the browser to the actual cookie in the "Cookies" folder on your hard drive. If you are interested in truly purging your system of internet files, you'll need to clean out that folder as well.In my view, the most judicious option is to utilize available software to manage the content of your temporary internet files. Some files you want because they make your life easier. Some files you don't want because it bogs down your computer and makes your grandmother blush. Software is available that scans your computer and finds all the internet files (including cookies). The software makes recommendations as to whether the file in question is good, bad, or ugly - all you have to do is decide to keep or trash it, then click the appropriate button.Temporary internet files can make our internet browsing time a quick and convenient experience. Unfortunately, they may also pose a risk to the security of our hard drives. With a little hands-on management we can keep ourselves, our loved ones, and our computers happy, safe, and protected. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (DVD) Review

Nominated for three Academy Awards, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe follows on the heels of recent successful big screen adaptations of other childrens' fantasy novels such as The Lord of the Rings books and the Harry Potter series. But while each of these series feature underlying tones of Christian symbolism, The Chronicles of Narnia is overtly intended as a Christian allegory. Written by the brilliant 20th Century Oxford and Cambridge literature professor C.S. Lewis, the Narnia stories were a tribute to his deep Christian faith. And this big screen transition is something of which he can be proud. Directed by Andrew Adamson, veteran director of the Shrek franchise, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe is a master blend of traditional human acting and computer generated imagery.The film follows the exploits of the four Pevensie children, two brothers and two sisters. Set during the early years of World War II, their mother sends them away to the countryside in order to escape the relentless Nazi bombing raids on London. Left to their own devices in the cavernous mansion of Professor Kirke (Jim Broadbent), they engage in a traditional game of hide-and-seek, whereupon the youngest of children, Lucy (Georgie Henley) crawls into a lone wardrobe stationed in an otherwise empty room. Backing her way through the garments, she stumbles into a wintry wonderland where she encounters a faun named Mr. Tumnus (James McAvoy).Initially, Mr. Tumnus tries to kidnap the young girl, but he experiences a change of heart due to the kindness of her spirit. As a result, he reveals to her the truth about the land into which she stumbled. Narnia is dominated by the evil White Witch who claims to be ruler of the forest, but the true ruler is a lion named Aslan who prophesied long ago that two "sons of Adam" and "daughters of Eve" would usher in the end of the one hundred year darkness administered by the White Witch. Knowing the prophecy, the witch intends to murder the children upon their arrival. But when Lucy relays the facts of the adventure to her family, they don't believe her.Despite their initial reservations, her older siblings – Edmund (Skandar Keynes), Susan (Anna Popplewell), and Peter (William Moseley) – all find their way into the magical land of Narnia. With talking trees, a forest filled with danger, and an evil witch in hot pursuit, the Pevensie kids must navigate their way through the treacherous land in order to find Aslan (Liam Neeson), the Messianic lion king who can help them to fulfill their rightful destiny as heirs to the thrones of Narnia…Aided by an outstanding soundtrack which perfectly compliments each sequence of events, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe is an inspiring film of epic proportions. For Christians, it will have significant meaning far in excess of a traditional film. For instance, the climatic scene of the film in which Aslan provides the ultimate sacrifice will evoke images of Roman soldiers beating and mocking Jesus in the hours leading up to his crucifixion. It's undeniably the most powerful scene of the film. Meanwhile, Georgie Henley turns in an unforgettable performance as the innocent and playful Lucy. Her charisma exudes from the screen in a manner rarely common to child actors. This performance is complimented by Tilda Swinton who is magnificently cast in the role of the White Witch. She simultaneously displays the satanic traits of seductive beauty and ruthless cunning with heavenly perfection. Add a final battle sequence reminiscent of Braveheart, and you've got a blockbuster movie the whole family can enjoy. Although parents of small children who scare easily should take note that some of the scenes can be frightening, but probably no more frightening than Darth Vader and the aliens from Star Wars. Nevertheless, parents should preview the film before introducing it to young children. Antioxidants and Cancer

Our bodys cells are constantly in competition with substances called free radicals. Free radicals can cause untold damage to your body, harming just about everything inside your body. Some free radicals are made inside the body, while others are caused by the food we ingest and the air we breathe. To prevent free radical damage the body has a defense system of antioxidants. Antioxidants are elements that scavenge free radicals and terminate the damage they cause to the bodys cells. They also turn the free radicals into waste by-products, resulting in their elimination from the body. Because antioxidants prevent cellular damage, considered to be the conduit for cancer, aging, and other diseases and conditions, they are vital to our bodys good health. Antioxidants also have the amazing ability to repair previous damage to cells.We extract antioxidants from food. Fruits, vegetables, and other plant-based foods deliver hundreds of antioxidants to our bodies. The most common vitamin antioxidants come from vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene. Since the body cannot manufacture these vitamins, they must be supplied from our diet and/or supplements.*BETA-CAROTENE is a precursor to vitamin A (the body turns precursors into vitamin A). Because the body converts the beta-carotene into vitamin A, there is no set requirement of its dosage. Beta-carotene is found in many foods that are orange in color such as carrots, cantaloupe, squash, pumpkin, mangos, and sweet potatoes. Green leafy vegetables, broccoli, liver, spinach, tomatoes, and whole grains are also rich in beta-carotene. (Vitamin A has no antioxidant properties and can be toxic if taken in excessive doses.)*VITAMIN C is a very powerful antioxidant that strengthens the immune system and neutralizes free radicals, reducing the risk for several types of cancer. It helps make the collagen needed for healthy bones and blood vessels, and it controls infections. The best food sources for vitamin C are citrus fruits or juices, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, and spinach. Many breakfast cereals are also fortified with vitamin C. The recommended daily allowance is 60-100 mg per day. It is not recommended to take more than 2000 mg per day.*VITAMIN E, another powerful antioxidant, protects your cells against the effects of free radicals that can damage cells and contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease and cancer. Vitamin E has also been shown to play a role in immune function and DNA repair. Good sources of vitamin E are vegetable oils, nuts, green leafy vegetables, whole grains, and fortified cereals. The recommended daily allowance is between 12 and 15 IU per day.If your body suffers from a shortage of antioxidants, it greatly increases your risk of developing a number of diseases and conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. All of these diseases are linked to the foods we consume.As research into the role of antioxidants continues, the message is clear. If you have a 401(k) account, it can be very tempting to borrow from your account especially when your balance is very high and a loan could easily pay off existing debt, fund a home purchase, or pay for college tuition. Before you make the decision to borrow money, there are several things you must keep in mind to avoid risking your funds.Borrowing from a 401(k) can seem like a risk free loan, especially since you repay yourself with interest. However, there are costs involved that are not readily apparent to the borrower who elects to take out a loan:1. On the borrowed funds, you lose all tax-favored investment returns. In other words, you are effectively charged extra interest for the loaned funds.2. Any interest you pay, even though you are paying yourself, is not deductible, but will be taxable to you when the plan pays you back via future distributions.3. You may have to pay a fee to take out the loan. Add this expense to the loan costs to see if a loan is still cost effective.4. We have read about the unemployment rate being high. Really anything around six percent is pretty good and it is less than that now according to the statistics, but some politicians say it is terrible and others say it is reasonable. It depends upon which side of the isle you sit.Our Washington geniuses claim they are working on finding more employment. We have lost 2.7 million jobs over the last 3 years. That doesn't matter if you are NOT one of them. Finger pointing by everyone in our capitol blames "the other guy", but especially China and India. The total of jobs going overseas is only 300,000 out of the 2.7 million. Where did the other 2.4 million jobs go?As the economy slowed down in 2000 due to the increasing interest rates companies had to do something to keep profits. The work week could be shortened if you did not have a production line, but that doesn't work for service businesses. All unnecessary workers were laid off. As business contracted machines became idle and more people were chopped. But that was not enough. More production efficiencies were put in place so that fewer workers would be able to turn out the same amount of goods.Production dropped from the 92% to about 75% of capacity today. When a company has 100 machines and only 75 of them are producing there is no incentive for management to buy more machines.Sir Alan can try to stimulate further by lowering rates even more, but how much below 1% can you go? He could buy long-term bonds to further reduce rates to continue to stimulate the housing market, but financial stimulus does not create wealth. The banks borrow from the Fed at 1% to buy long-term government bonds that yield 4.2%. If I were a banker and could lock in 3.2% with no risk why should I make loans to businesses? And beside that I can fire all my loan officers to save more money.But we need more employment. How? The Federal government is hiring more people every day. These are new jobs, BUT they do not contribute to the overall economy. In fact every new government worker is another tax. In a factory a worker turns out products that adds to what is called Gross Domestic Product. A government worker turns out nothing and adds zero to the GDP and even has to give back part of his salary in taxes. The IRS takes in the money, gives it to Congress who creates burocracies that hire people to recirculate the cash. Every government worker is a tax.This makes the employment numbers look good, but adds nothing to our economic production. It is a way to keep money flowing. Knowing your weather your sites have been indexed and which pages have been spidered is vital. You may not be aware that you can log into the control panel of your website and access the raw logs in order to be able to see which spiders from the search engines have visited your site and which pages have been indexed. Boost Your Job Security and Make Yourself Promote-able: WOW 'Em From Day One

Jobs are disappearing every day. The key to saving yours or even improving your position is making yourself valuable to the company—being promote-able rather than dispensable. Here's a quick list of things you can do every day (starting with Day One) to boost your own job security:-- Make your boss look good. If you're key to making your boss succeed, and s/he gets promoted, you increase your chances of being promoted, too.-- Put forth your very best effort in everything you're asked to do, no matter how trivial it may seem. It's probably not trivial to your boss.-- Dress like those who are one level above you in the organization. If you look like the guy at the bottom of the totem pole, you're more likely to stay there, because that's how others will think of you.-- Keep a notepad and pen with you at all times to keep track of names, deadlines, and promises made. A big part of your job is to make your boss succeed. If s/he doesn't take good notes, yours might 'save' them sometime—making you even more valuable.-- Offer opinions only when asked; offer solutions and helpful information as often as possible. Bring problem situations to the attention of your boss only after you have formulated at least one solution or improvement that you can present at the same time—unless, of course, it's an emergency that's time-critical, but still try to have at least one even-partially-formulated potential solution.-- Always keep up with reading the most important publications associated with your line of work. It may be the local paper, the Wall Street Journal, or a professional journal—either subscribe, go to the library, borrow a copy, or read it online, but keep up with the news and trends in your field so you will always be current.-- Never hand in the first draft of any written work—put extra effort into accuracy, thoroughness, and attention to detail (especially grammar and spelling). Use writing aids or take a class, if necessary. In a professional office environment, your chances of promotion are pretty slim if you don't have good writing skills.-- When you're not very busy, don't sit back and relax. Ask for more work—but take on only as much as you can accomplish at a high level of quality.-- Try to meet as many people as possible in order to build your professional network of contacts. You'll want to keep in touch with these people when they, or you, leave the company.-- Always follow the unwritten rules of the workplace to a 'T.' If you 'rub someone the wrong way' or end up on the wrong end of a political struggle, you may ruin your chances of being promoted or could even lose your job. What you see as independence or creativity may be seen by your superiors as rebellion or inflexibility.-- Be a team player. Devote your energies to helping your project team or department succeed, and make an effort to get along well with your teammates—always giving credit where it's due. Taking the credit for work or ideas that are not yours always ends up backfiring, sooner or later.-- Improve on, or learn, foreign language skills. Companies with international offices, or planning to expand, will use these as criteria for making international assignments or promotions into management. It's becoming more important every year.-- Learn the business—cross-training is critical. It's great to be an 'expert' in your own field or department, but if you can find ways to learn about other departments, projects, or teams, you make yourself even more valuable. If cross-department projects come up, volunteer for them. Or take night classes to learn the fundamental skills of a different department than the one you're in.-- Keep your eye on the details of your work. Grasping the Big Picture is great and valuable, but staying intimate with the details of your projects will prevent anything from 'falling through the cracks' that could jeopardize your credibility or job.-- Network, network, network—inside and outside your company. The more people who know of you and your abilities, the greater your opportunities will be for better assignments, promotions, and future job leads in other companies. Waiting until you need contacts is not the time to start networking!-- Be a problem solver. Always look for ways of finding and distributing valuable information; offering solutions to problems; brainstorming ideas for improving procedures; or creating new products or services. Never be critical about the way things are now; just offer ways to make things better.-- When working on a project, don't assume everything will go smoothly. It probably won't. Stay positive, but also try to anticipate problems and have solutions ready so you don't get pulled down and lose focus.-- Try to find a mentor. Ask at your professional association—they may have a list of executives who are willing to help young people along by 'showing them the ropes' and offering advice. One savvy insight from a mentor can go a long way to solidifying your future.
-- Keep track of your accomplishments, the equipment you've used, and the skills you've learned. Update your resume every time you accomplish something significant or different so you won't have to rush if you ever need one quickly. You'll need it to apply for a promotion, for a move to another department, if you get laid off, or if you hear of a great opportunity elsewhere.-- Ask your boss what it takes to get promoted, devise a strategy with him to get any training you need, and concentrate on those areas on a daily basis.-- Continue to learn all you can about technological improvements in your field—they determine how you perform your job.
