Alloy Wheel Repair: Depends on Extent of Damage to Alloy Wheels

Author : Tim Gowens
Alloy wheels can make a big difference in a car or motorcycle, with improved handling and a beautiful appearance. Because of this, enthusiasts have been upgrading to larger wheels for years, replacing basic steel wheels and hubcaps to set a vehicle apart from others and to provide a smoother ride. The staging area at the repair facility. To capitalize on this trend, manufacturers have begun to change their styling to appeal to consumer demand for larger and flashier wheels, equipping even everyday vehicles like SUVs, compact cars, vans and motorcycles with larger-diameter alloy wheels. While they look great, alloy wheels present a problem. Wheels from European manufacturers like Volvo, as well as 2- and 3-piece wheels, like BBS, tend to be soft and are more easily damaged. When they are damaged – bent or curbed, among other potential issues – do you need to completely replace them?Replacing your wheels – through a dealer or local performance wheel shop – can cost hundreds of dollars and take days, depending on the severity of the damage.Repair vs. ReplaceNecessity, they say, is the mother of invention. Because replacing a factory wheel can range from $350 to $2,000 per wheel (for some Porsche wheels), those who didn't want to invest in wheel replacement from a dealer began asking about having them "bent" back out – and the wheel rim repair industry was born.So long as safety isn't an issue (that is, when a wheel can be repaired by a professional technician without jeopardizing the lives of the passengers relying on the wheel to do its job), then alloy wheel repair is an excellent choice for economy and cosmetic restoration. But when a wheel has been damaged severely, Metro Wheels will not compromise your safety: if there's any question, we'll err on the side of not repairing what could lead to serious injury. Our Team of ExpertsMetro Wheel's repair facilityOne of the better-known alloy wheel repair businesses in the country is Metro Wheels, Inc. in Marietta, Georgia, just north of Atlanta. Metro has one of the largest wheel repair facilities and wheel networking capacity in the country, with the expert team to repair alloy wheels quickly and safely. At Metro Wheels, we teamed up with the sharpest engineers to design a state-of-the-art wheel repair facility. Our repair processes assure 95-100% wheel accuracy at completion.Wheel repair in many areas has been saturated with many companies claiming that they can fix any wheel. But the truth is that many of them are "fly by the night" companies with a sledgehammer and a torch. This is not the proper way to fix any wheel. Some can make the wheel unsafe by not properly applying consistent pressures in a specific way with an exact heat. They stress crack the wheel beyond safety standards and call it a repaired wheel. But you could be jeopardizing your safety and that of your family by using someone without proper experience.Because we have been in business for over 15 years, our experience in alloy wheel repairs exceeds most shops'. Our aluminum wheel repair specialists can repair most wheels that have been curbed, scraped up, cracked or chemically damaged, providing excellence in both structural and cosmetic repairs; and our professional, certified welders are second to none.Checking the wheelMetro Wheels uses its own engineered equipment and guaranteed processes to return damaged, scraped and, in most cases, cracked wheels back to their original factory specifications. Because your safety is our highest priority, we will not repair any alloy wheel that cannot be safely ridden on after repair.Metro Wheels' Repair ProcessThe repair process is straightforward. First, we mount the wheel accurately on a vehicle simulator. With the proper heat, consistent hydraulic pressure and light vibrations under pressure, the alloy wheel will move – without cracking – back to its original condition. If there is a crack that can't be seen by the naked eye (under chrome or paint), it will instantly pop out; our certified welders will then fill and repair the crack. After the wheel has cooled, it will retain its original strength. Heat, consistent pressure and vibration are key to an excellent wheel repair.detailing areaWhen a wheel is delivered to Metro Wheels, it is either dropped off by the owner, shipped in or picked up in the metro Atlanta area from our wholesale customers. We generate a work order for each individual wheel detailing the customer's information and any special instructions. Each wheel is assigned a unique work order number that is engraved on the inside of the rim, so that Metro can track its history precisely. This number also makes it much easier to track the wheel throughout the repair process.Once identified, each wheel is washed thoroughly to remove all brake dust, because the dust could be hiding additional scratches, gouges or cracks. Metro uses a pressure washer system with a diluted acid-based cleaning compound that will not damage a wheel's existing finish.wheel washerThis is particularly important because brake dust removal is essential to determining the level of damage to a wheel. But it must be done correctly, because wheels with a polished or anodized finish can be damaged if the wrong washing compound is used. For instance, a two-piece wheel with a bright lip that is not chromed is typically an anodized finish, a chemical treatment that is very hard to see. If the wrong cleaner or acid is used on such a finish, the wheel surface will be streaked; however, this anodized finish can be stripped off and any scratches buffed out.Once thoroughly cleaned, one of our expert technicians performs a complete inspection of the wheel for radial and lateral runout.Radial runout is vertical, and Metro measures to see just how much the wheel is out of round with a micrometer gauge that measures to 1/1,000 of an inch. If a wheel has 5/1,000 of an inch radial runout, you could put a dial indicator on the wheel and then spin the wheel. The distance the wheel traveled up and down while spinning would be 5/1,000 of an inch both in the high and low position – or swing.Lateral runout, on the other hand, is how much the damaged wheel will wobble from side to side. On some larger diameter wheels subjected to a hard pothole hit or curb, the wheel will be bent and, if hit hard enough, it will bend and twist the spokes. Most lateral runout can be corrected with pressure on the back of the wheel. But when the lateral runout cannot be corrected, the wheel is not repairable.Lateral runout is the hardest type of repair to accomplish. It also happens to be the most deceptive, because while a wheel may look like it has only minor rim damage, it can actually be fairly significant and not easily seen to the naked eye unless the wheel is spinning. This is especially common on newer front-wheel-drive cars, where much of the force is cantilevered to the back. The next point of inspection is for alloy defects such as curb rashes and cracks. Metro recommends that the tires be removed for this inspection because most damage cannot be seen otherwise.Cracks can be Serious BusinessCracks are of particular importance, because they are the single most common type of damage that can leave a wheel beyond repair. When a wheel bends near the base of a spoke, haze marks in the finish can sometimes be seen and indicate cracks. Because repairing a wheel is not always best in a particular situation, it is important that the wheel is thoroughly examined.# We value your safety above everything else and, for that reason, Metro Wheels considers a wheel to be irreparable if cracks appear: Near the base of a spoke
# Near the lug area
# On the inner lip of the wheel away from the spokes. (But if a crack is smaller in size, this type of damage is usually salvageable.)Cracks are particularly common on chrome-plated wheels, where the chroming process tends to render the wheel more brittle than a standard-finish wheel. Sometimes, if a chrome wheel is bent severely, the chrome has to be removed because there can be cracks underneath the chrome. In the case of a cracked chrome wheel, Metro will grind the chrome out and re-weld it.Finally, we inspect for finish defects, searching out poor paint finish or additional scuffs and scratches.Once fully inspected, all information is added to the wheel's work order. Metro then confirms the cost of the work with the customer and remarks on other items that might be involved, such as valve stem types, tire mounting and any other details. Once approved by the customer, work begins.Color and Finishes the Way You Wantpaint boothIf the wheel needs refinishing, it is first stripped using an acrylic medium similar to sand. This medium is superior to steel shot or metal oxide, which are more commonly used. Though they remove the finish more quickly and are cheaper, they also rough up the surface and tear away some of the metal. This is particularly destructive when you want to retain any original cast markings that the manufacturer has displayed. The wheel is placed in a blast cabinet with circulating plastic beads, removing the finish without removing metal. But we do not do this in every situation, because old paint is always the best primer base. We will sometimes fill in the existing finish, prep the surface and cover it with new paint. The next step in the process is straightening the wheel. This removes the majority of the damage as well as any side-to-side wobble. After straightening, our welders rebuild the outer lip and repair any scrapes or cracks. Metro uses a Tig welding process which matches the base alloy with the weld alloy. The weld is then ground down or relathed and renders the wheel back to its original condition.Metro typically returns the wheel to 1-10/1,000 of an inch, where factory tolerances are typically 15/1,000 of an inch radial runout. (For comparison, approximately 25/1,000 of an inch can be detected by the human eye.)Once the wheel is true, it is time to refinish, re-machine or re-polish the wheel. Metro uses a computer color-matching system to match the factory paint finish. If the color is not on file, our painters can match by eye, or deliver a custom finish that is white, anthracite or matched to the owner's specifications.paint mixing areaMetro backs its wheel finishes with a limited lifetime warranty provided by the paint manufacturer. We assure that the wheel will be free of material defect. While this warranty does not cover previous repair wheel scraping or damage to the finish due to the use of improper cleaning chemicals or customer error, it does cover discoloration, fading or peeling for no reason. If the wheel has a machined finish, it is put on a lathe. Metro has a wide array of CNC programs for most factory and many custom wheels. If we don't have it in stock, our programmers can write the program needed to perform the exact cut.Upon completion, each wheel is subjected to a final quality check. It is examined for runout and the finish is checked for dirt or dust in the paint, unevenness or orange peel. If everything checks out, the wheel is ready for tire mounting or delivery.Mounting Your Repaired WheelsbridgeportUpon request, Metro can mount your repaired tires. This is important because we can mount low profile tires without damaging the wheel. Some wheels are harder to install than others and it is not uncommon for wheel mounting facilities to damage a wheel during tire installation. There have been many times when we have sent out a wheel that looks great, but was re-damaged by an inexperienced tire tech.Metro wheels can also repair your motorcycle wheel using the same process but on different machines. We accept motorcycle wheels without the tire mounted, and containing the barring. Generally, wire wheels do not repair as easily as alloy wheels. Metro will make some basic repairs to wire wheels but we ask that, if the wheel is substantially damaged, owners try to replace it instead – for your own safety. In addition to repairing alloy wheels, Metro Wheels can replace wheels from our stock of more than 50,000 parts and even exchange wheels using our Core Exchange Program and wide network of sources. With our available capabilities, Metro Wheels can also customize a set of wheels, or repair rare or out of production wheels. Polishing and chroming are two popular options, and we can provide just about any shade or color of painted finish.Metro Wheels developed this intensive repair process through more than 15 years in the business. We are meticulous in providing alloy wheel repair that meets or exceeds all applicable safety standards – and you can rely on that.Learn more about alloy wheel repair at Metro Wheels.

Mobile Car Wash Business in Southern California

Author : Lance Winslow
A good and inexpensive small business to start in Southern California, due to the good weather might be a mobile carwash. You may not want a business that large, perhaps a couple man operation; yourself and a friend? Remembering of course it is a lot of work. You might have a few questions before you invest in such a business, such as what type of advertising should you use? We have found flyers work the best, with personal sales and referrals from your excellent work. If you are looking to decide the best prices you will want to do a quick survey of the mobile car wash industry, but remember that the prices in your area would be substantially higher.Since the business is very simple, there are few operational challenges. There are no operational challenges at all. Except Labor quality and work ethic, but that is to be expected in America right now; drug issues, laziness and lack of caring or responsibility.Expenses breakdown and profitability would be something that could not be determined until one knows the potential volume of business you will be doing. You should know this by about the fourth week into the business. Additionally once you determine your price points you will be able to better put together a proforma and know the distances on your route between clientele for proper fuel costs. Mobile car washing is a cash business generally no collection issues unless you do fleets in that case Government at all levels are very slow to pay almost to a level of fraudulent. Corporations may string you out if you have not made good upfront accounts payable policies in the agreement. One thing that is very important in the mobile car wash business is environmental concerns for wash water run-off. It is somewhat of a selling point in Southern Cal, as citizens are very concerned in California about clean water and the environment. But realize it is also required as per California Regional Water Quality Control Board. California Water code; see 13:260 - 13:380. The rule is simple; basically you cannot allow water to flow into a storm drain, that is the rule. Most water evaporates, if it is not evaporating then block storm drain and vacuum into storage container and make a deal with a Coin-Op car wash to dump there and trade for free pressure-washing services.Good luck in your mobile car wash business in Southern California if you decide to go for it, just remember it is extremely hard work and therefore although the money is good, you will be working your butt off, think about that if you are serious.Lance Winslow - Online Think Tank forum board. Mobile Car Wash Arrangements at Corporations

Author : Lance Winslow
When a new entrepreneur sets out into the mobile car wash business they often wonder how they should go about arranging exclusivity to wash at large corporations or office buildings. One question that is often asked is; "Do I have to pay for the rights to provide your car wash service there?" truly you would be advised to do this as a last resort you should attempt to shy away from this really. In fact you would be well advised to not mention such things. Although it is not totally uncommon in the industry, you will find that the amenities you provide for their employees far surpasses their small earnings from a percentage of your gross take or a few dollars per car.Now with that said, there are some instances it does make a lot of sense for instance it the Corporation or building gives you something in return. For instance if they provide you Assigned stalls to work in, water outlets, reclaim clarifier area, email alerts to tell people we are there, collects money for us and takes their percentage out. Then it could make sense. Also if you are in markets where lots of payola goes on such as CT, NJ, PA, TX, NV it might be required, but generally if this is the case you will know soon enough up front, as the owner or controller of such properties will say straight up; "What is in it for us or What is in it for me?Sometimes if a parking garage company or a valet service is involved then it does make sense to use their ability to sign up your customers and pay them a commission. Think on this.Lance Winslow - Online Think Tank forum board. If you have innovative thoughts and unique perspectives, come think with Lance; www.WorldThinkTank.net/wttbbs/

Mazda Miata 2006: The Weekly Driver Review

Author : James Raia
Certain cars acquire reputations via buyers' gender or age group
rather than the size, style, price or performance of the vehicle.Volkswagen's Beetle and Chrysler's PT Cruiser are surprisingly popular
among women drivers. The Honda Element was marketed to appeal to
young drivers, but it's been successful among urban families who enjoy
recreation.Like the Beetle and PT Cruiser, the Mazda Miata has had great success
among women drivers, and it's become the world's best-selling two-
passenger convertible. But Mazda had other plans, and they're overtly
apparent considering the 2006 version.First, Mazda now prefers the name MX-5 to Miata. More importantly, the
Miata, which debuted in 1990, has undergone vast changes for '06. It's
2.5 inches longer in the wheelbase, 1.6 inches longer overall and 1.7
inches wider. It's engine has increased from 1.8 liters and 142
horsepower to 2.0 liters to 170 horsepower.Additionally, color scheming has drastically improved and the car's
presence on the road is anything but its previous "soft" reputation. My test vehicle for the week was the Mazda Grand Touring edition with a
six-speed manual transmission — one of six available MX-5 models. It
was nothing short of a quick, stylish, nicely appointed sports car. It
perfectly fit the sports car stereotype — long on fun and short on
practicality. The 2006 Miata is the Mazda's third generation of the vehicle, but it's
really an entirely new vehicle. Its exterior presence reveals a lot. Unlike
some red sports cars, the Mazda's shade is more a rich, dark brick red
and it's perfectly complemented by the dark tan leather interior.New also for 2006 Miata are 17-inch wheels, front and rear stabilizer
bars, xenon headlights, and a one-touch, convertible top with a glass
rear window. It all further nicely adds to the Miata's new look. The vehicle's interior is equally impressive. There's plenty of leg room,
considering the car's two-seat convertible status. Gauges and other
instrumentation are clean, well-positioned and function with ease. The convertible top system is particularly impressive. Unlock one latch
above the central console with the push of a button and the top easily
folds back into a flush position. It securely locks into place with a slight
push on the top once it's snugly positioned into place. When you're
ready to put the top back, simply push another lever inside the rear seat
console and the top releases. Although it's a manual system, it easily
returns into position and secures with the same latch.Considering the nature of convertibles, the Miata isn't particularly quiet
on the open road. Conversations are difficult at best, but the noise factor
is greatly reduced when the windows and the rear wind screen between
the two seats are all in the their up positions. Whne the convertible top is
up, the noise level is average. The 2006 Miata/MX-5 performs well. Steering and handling is quick, and
maneuvering through traffic is efficient in stop-and-go traffic or in
interstate situations. In one lane change scenario in highway conditions
there was a noticeable skid.Despite the momentarily lapse, the new Miata is a fine choice. It's
matched against the Honda S2000 and the Pontiac Solstice in the
sports car category. The entry level price point for the Solstice is lower
than the MX-5 and it has not yet been reviewed. The Honda S2000 has
been reviewed twice by the Weekly Driver and it performs according to
the high standards of the manufacturer. It has 70 more horsepower than
the Mazda, and other strong features. Its base prices is more than
$6,000 higher than a comparably equipped Miata/MX-5.Briefly stated, the new and improved Miata/MX-5 is handsome and
priced well. And its history a sports car particularly popular only among
women drivers is likely soon to change.2006 Mazda Miata/MX-5Safety features – Dual front and side impact airbags.Fuel Mileage (estimates) – 24 (city), 30 (highway).Warranty – Bumper to bumper, 4 years/50,000 miles; Corrosion,
5 years/unlimited mileage; Road side assistance, 4 years/50,000 miles.Price range – $20,435—$26,700.James Raia is a freelance writer, author and publisher in Sacramento,

How Many Car Washes Are in the United States?

Author : Lance Winslow
We know pretty certain from public records and auto sales how many cars are in the United States, but have you ever wondered how many car washes are available to wash all those cars? With the long lines at the carwash it often appears the answer is, Not Enough! What is interesting is that in the carwash industry even the industry's own surveys often disagree. Many people call Conveyor car washes those full-serve types. I think the estimates are between 17,000 to 26,000 in US 50 states and 4 territories. And they say there are 35,000 Coin-ops. 35,000 rollovers. Now are there duplicates of rollovers at coin-ops? YES. Is that considered? Maybe, depends on the carwash self proclaimed Guru and which anal-ist report you are looking at? But judging by these numbers the 10% number for full-service car washes could be close to accurate and is why you have to wait in line for a good decent carwash. This trend shows that the other types of carwashes are outpacing conveyor systems, bummer for the carwash clientele that want a complete full wash with great service. But like the steel industry, it is only because they are costly and have not adapted along the way very much, except for the new old man Hanna Carwash Systems, have some new stuff, which actually washes the car, better. We need better conveyor systems in the US to handle cars with spoilers and ground effects, dually pickups and wide tires on SUVs, Hummers etc. These types of cars make up 15% of the US car market, but 25% of those who most often care about how their vehicle looks, Any manufacturing company which denies this market to go after the other 75% of the market is foolish, because with minor modifications in design, you could service the whole thing. How? Well use a people mover concept with a pop-up system to catch tires and pull car, truck, SUV thru, if you had these all over the conveyor system then you would prevent injury, cars going sideways, damage and save time in first morning ghost wash to test system. Plus you would save 10 seconds in the tunnel due to time to hook cars up on the conveyor system, roll in motion instead. Think on that.Lance Winslow - Online Think Tank forum board. Some Security Measures for Parking Lots

Author : Ispas Marin
If you are considering the option of opening a parking lot, you should always think about the security measures and their costs, of course. Security measures don't seem like a big thing, but they are extremely important. If an aggressive incident takes place in your parking lot, people will soon start looking for other places to park their cars. This mean loss of income, business may face the risk of losing the clients. So, always pay attention to good parking lot security measures. In order to decide on the best security measures, you should first identify the risks involved. The emergency issue is very important. Strict security problems or severe medical emergencies should be quickly located and solved in your parking lot. You should think of ways of letting the parking services' providers know of the critical situation which is occurring. A visual signal, a light, a strong sound would be a good measure for informing the parking security staff that a sensitive situation needs to be handled.Another important problem is finding a fast way of servicing a driver that is facing a technical problem like a flat tyre or a dead battery. Or how to give assistance to a driver that has confused the place where he/she has parked the car in a huge, multi-story parking lot. Therefore, the parking services should be very friendly and helpful. The best way of combating situation of any origin in your parking lot is to have a video surveillance system, access control and an intercom. Actually, combining these three systems and adding a good lighting system is the best measure. For better results, these systems shouldn't be limited only to the inside of the parking lot; they should be extended to the outside of the parking lot.You should also equip your parking lot premises with emergency phones, for a better communication between your security staff and the driver in distress. And remember to always train your security staff on issues about how to react properly and efficiently to a critical situation or an emergency. All these measures should ensure a better security for your parking lot. But keep in mind that fast and accurate reaction is the element that is making the difference between a severe, violent incident and a minor happening! For great parking protection services just visit us at http://www.parkingprotectionservices.co.uk

Jaguar E-Type -- Favorite Feline of the Sports-Car World

Author : David Bellm
It was pure lust on wheels. Jaguar's voluptuous E-type had car enthusiasts' tongues hanging down to their knees when it was introduced. And to this day the car commands head-spinning attention whenever it makes the scene.First conceived in 1956, the E-Type was originally intended as a replacement for the Coventry, England firm's mighty D-Type endurance racers. Jaguar quit racing shortly after the E-Type's development began, but work on the car continued nonetheless, culminating in a production roadgoing version introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in March, 1961. Offered as a two-seat coupe or convertible, it was an immediate hit.Among the car's revolutionary features was independent rear suspension, a first for Jaguar, at a time when almost all streetable sports cars still used a more primitive solid-axle setup. But the E-Type's most compelling claim at the time was its speed. The car's smooth aerodynamics and 265-hp 3.8-liter inline six allowed it a top speed of 150 mph -- strictly the domain of race cars and ultra-pricey exotics back then. Although not cheap, the E-Type offered such thrills for far less money than similar-performing machines. To ensure the E-Type's continuing sales appeal, Jaguar gave the car a succession of changes over the years. The 3.8-liter six was replaced for 1965 by a 4.2-liter version that had more torque. The following year, a 2+2 bodystyle was introduced. In 1971, Jaguar launched the final iteration of the E-Type, powered by a 314-hp 5.3-liter V12. The last of the 72,507 E-Types left the plant in early 1975.Today, experts invariably list the E-Type as one of the world's most beautiful cars. Combine that appealing design with the car's pleasing road manners and sporty smooth exhaust purr, and you've got one of the finest sensory delights known to man.For more articles on vintage sports cars, along with drive-test articles on today's hottest performance cars, go to http://www.autiv.com/David Bellm is a seasoned automotive writer and historian. Extra Extra! Car Covers Save Car!

Author : John Morris
Your automobile is one of the most important investments you will make aside from your house. So it only follows that you would watch over this prized possession as a mother would her child. While singing it lullabyes, you will want to keep it from getting scratched or stained. This is where a good car cover comes in. Without this simple but highly effective protection, you are sure to have your baby sporting dents and scratches in no time. If you're looking for a good guide to choosing a car cover for your vehicle, you have come to the right place.Imagine the dread when you find the first dent or scratch on your new vehicle. Unfortunately, it's a fact of life. Unless you are considering covering your vehicle in plated steel, chances are you will be seeing more of these dents and scratches in your life. However, a good car cover can, at the very least, keep your car away from many of the needless scratches it could endure.Birds, trees, and dust all pose a scratch hazard to your car. They may seem harmless, but looks can be deceiving.BirdsDon't you just hate it when those birds just can't seem to let loose their bombs unless there are right over something important? Jump the gun! Get protection for your car!Bird droppings are acidic and could cause discoloration or even corrosion to your paint finish. Most outdoor car cover fabrics are designed to keep those droppings from harming your car.TreesWe all love them for the shade. But trees have a deadly sense of retribution. Falling branches, nuts, fruits, and sap can all put scratches and stains on you car. And don't forget our friendly neighborhood birds (where else would they be found?). If you're really unlucky, a large branch might come crashing your way. So always be careful which tree you choose to park under.DustYou might think that your car paint can weather dust storms. Unfortunately that armor of paint you talk about is only .006 inches thick. Dust that settles on your cars surface could cause tiny scratches if it gets rubbed in. Indoor car cover fabrics and Outdoor car cover fabrics are designed to keep that dust away from your vehicle.Thieves! That thin lining of cloth might not look like it can repel large hazards to your car. But, look again! It could even save your car from thieving fiends! Thieves usually bypass covered vehicles because they take more time to get into. Since their goal is to get the car out of there in the least amount of time, they usually look for those that are easier to get in to. Add a lock and cable to your car cover, and you will keep those pesky thieves scrambling for a different quarry.RainRain is usually harmless. But a strong downpour could assist dust and other debris in scratching the surface of your car. A good outdoor car-cover gives your car a much needed raincoat.SunshineHarsh UV rays and the intense heat of the Sun can bleach the color right out of your car. A car cover makes sure these harmful elements are deflected. It also keeps the interior of your car cooler.WinterYour car's finish will have no problem with the cold. It will, though, have a problem with the moisture and the salt. Both elements can wreck havoc on your paint job. Keep your car cover on to prevent this.Things to Consider in Choosing the Right Car CoverConsider the following when choosing a car cover:1. The places where you park and how frequent you use your car2. Weather in the places you often drive to3. What color will work best in the weather you drive. For sunny areas a light color helps keep the vehicle cooler. In area with snow, a high contrast vehicle makes for better visibility.4. Parking areas. Nissan: 40 Years in North America

Author : Matthew Keegan
The North American market has seen some bold changes by Nissan over the years. Originally imported under the Datsun name, Nissan cars in Canada and the US made the switch over to the new name in the early 1980s and the company hasn't been the same since. A broader line up and the introduction of the luxurious Infiniti brand in the late 1980s changed the face of Nissan tremendously. The winners are consumers everywhere who can get a great vehicle for a fair price. It was in 1965 when the first Datsuns arrived in Canada. Who could forget the 1600cc 510 wagon with a 4 speed manual transmission? The only thing that could kill this car was rust and a rust bucket it was at that. Or, how about the 620 pick up? A great little hauler that is in a league of its own. My personal favorite was the 720 pick up truck equipped with a diesel engine. A good, sturdy truck that really sipped fuel.Today's Nissan line up is a far cry from the cars that dotted the landscape during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. For consumers that is probably a good thing too. Today's line up still offers glimpses of the original Datsuns with the Sentra reminding some of the old B210, but about ten times more comfortable at that too. The Altima, Maxima, and the revived 350Z round out the car line up and when you add in all the SUVs and trucks that Nissan now sells the Japanese automaker has something for everyone.Consumers are maintaining their Nissans/Datsuns with premium Nissan parts and accessories. Your dealer will have what you need, but remember the prices you pay for parts through the dealership will be the prevailing retail rate. Some national auto parts chains will have a decent selection, but they may have difficulty hunting down the rare Datsun or early Nissan part for you.A new choice for consumers is auto parts wholesalers, particularly those who sell online. Prices are usually much lower because wholesalers buy direct from leading manufacturers including Bosch, K&N, Hella, Monroe, Covercraft, and others. Still, make sure that the retailer is based in Canada and not charging you outrageous shipping and duty charges for parts shipped in from the US or elsewhere. The selection they offer to you should be great, parts stocked must meet or exceed OEM requirements, and customer service should be just a click of the mouse and/or a toll free phone number away.Be careful of retailers specializing in generic Nissan parts as counterfeit auto parts are a big problem in North America. Always learn in advance what the company's shipping, return, and warranty policies are before making your purchase.Copyright 2005 -- Matt Keegan is a contributing writer for Auto Parts Canada, a wholesaler of fine Nissan parts and Nissan accessories for your Datsun or Nissan truck, van, SUV, or passenger car.

Green Air Filters For Your Car

Author : Matthew Keegan
Alright, all you soy sipping, yogurt eating, diet doing, hybrid driving, environmentally eccentric folks from Vancouver: listen up. You may be causing more damage to the environment than you already know. How so? Your Audi's air filter, that's how. Yes, it is true: if you keep your car long enough you will be performing under-the-hood maintenance which will include changing your air filter at least once a year. Keep that same car for ten years and that is ten years of stuff clogging North America's landfills. And you call yourself earth friendly? Tsk, tsk!All kidding aside, there is an environmentally friendly way whereby if you follow just one small, but important step you can achieve oneness with nature, if not with your wallet: replace your car's disposable air filter one final time with a reusable air filter.Reusable air filters, or performance air filters as some like to call them, are a true "green" item. No, the air filter isn't green itself, but the result is the same effect: you can replace your car's air filter one final time with a reusable air filter that should outlast your car. Environmentally friendly air filters are on the market and they have several key benefits to them, including:You replace your car's disposable air filter once and for all with a reusable air filter.Environmentally sensitive landfills are permanently rid of an extra ten or more disposable air filters that you would have used.Your reusable air filter will cost approximately 2 or 3 times the price of a disposable filter, however you will get that money back and ultimately save in the long run.Your car will actually perform better as reusable air filters help your engine breathe better. Better breathing for your engine means better performance. You may realize a slight increase in fuel mileage as a better performing engine means a more efficient engine. All in all, you can show yourself to be environmentally responsible and save yourself some many in the process of doing the right thing. Reusable air filters are truly a green friendly product and are worth being placed in your car the next time you change your air filter.Copyright 2005 -- Matt Keegan is a contributing writer for Auto Parts Canada, a wholesaler of fine

Do Radar Detectors Still Work?

Author : Matthew Henderson
A Radar Detector is a small electronic device used to detect the Police's radar units from a decent distance, so you can slow down and avoid getting a speeding ticket from the police. What a Radar Detector picks up, and whether or not it works, depends on the make and model of the radar gun used by the police, and what kind of frequency the gun is tuned to.The majority of basic Radar Detectors are tuned to the same frequency as most Police radar guns, but the Police may occasionally switch their guns to a different frequency. Older Radar Detectors depend heavily on the assumption that an officer will have his radar turned on at all times. If the Officer suddenly turns on their gun, older Radar detectors will likely not give you enough warning. Also, you must take in to account that some newer radar guns have stopped using the easily detectable frequencies used by older guns, instead opting to use less obvious bandwidths. A more sophisticated Radar Detector can still pick up on these signals, but older, less advanced Radar Detectors will not be of any use for detecting signals from these newer guns. The newest technology in speeding detection uses a completely different method; it uses laser light, instead of sound waves. This system is called LIDAR, and older Radar Detectors are useless against it. To beat LIDAR, you must have a Radar Detector that is more modern and built to work with laser technology instead of older radio based technology. So, the answer is yes, Radar Detectors still work, but the older Radar Detectors are becoming less efficient, so your best bet is to have a more modern Radar Detector so you know for sure you'll be covered. Otherwise, it's a 50/50 chance of the radar not being picked up.Matthew Henderson is editor at Auto-Fleet.com. Chemically Improving Your Gas Mileage in Your Car

Author : David Maillie
What if you could actually improve your gas mileage significantly (5-20%)? Not have to alter your driving habits? Not have to install any extra questionable parts on your car? What if it were as easy to do as 1-2-3?Well, it is.For years Big Oil has offered three or so different grades of gas octane 87 regular, 89-90 premium and 91-94 super. These grades are actually based upon a 100 octane scale where the cleanest burning, most ideal fuel was propane (clean burn fuel). But the scale never took into account arromatic petrol compounds and derivatives which can actually surpass the 100 octane mark, some as high as 115-130 octane. So the object here is to get the engine running the cleanest burning fuel possible, leave less soot and deposits in the combustion chamber and on the valves, clean the injection system, or in older cars the carburetor, not hurt emmisions systems, not void our warranty, and, in the end, get increased gas mileage and increased engine life. Wow, thats a lot. It really isn't, though. In recent tests it has been proven that arromatic petroleum distillates, alcohol (methyl alcohol), ether, acetone, and toluene can and will do all of these. That is to a point. If you make the fuel mixture too rich you can actually do the opposite. The ideal mixture found that was easiest to obtain and handle was 1-2 ounces of acetone per full tank (acetone can be found at your local hardware store or paint supply shop). This was tested on everything from 4-8 cylinder gas engines to big Cummings diesel engines. The range in increase of fuel efficincy was 5-20% and the average being 9%. It was found if you used 3 or more ounces per tank ful results were the same or worse than without the acetone - the mixture was too rich. The effects of the acetone were then tested on the fuel line components themselves for resilience and it was found that unlike methyl alcohol (racing fuel) it did not have a caustic effect. Acetone will have a etching effect on paint, plastic headlight lenses, etc... Spills should be wiped up immediately. So, to make the story short and get straight to the point, if you wanted to add an average of 9% fuel efficiency to your vehicle and do it for less than $.50 per fillup - its as easy as adding 1-2 ounces acetone per tankfull. Thats it - the only problems are Big Oil doesn't want you to know how to save on gas and you may still void you warranty as they now test for gas additives like acetone. Also, one last note, acetone or any additive that makes your engine more efficient and burn cleaner is better for the environment - less emmissions.David Maillie is a chemist with over 12 years experience in biochemical research and clynical analysis. 3 Exceptional European Automakers

Author : Matthew Keegan
When you think of exceptional cars that are built in Europe, does your mind run strictly to cars made by Rolls Royce, BMW, or Mercedes? Perhaps Jaguar and Lamborghini come to mind as well. Each of these makes deserve all the accolades given to them. Still, there are three makes that are, for various reasons, exceptional. Let's take a look at Volvo, Volkswagen, and Audi, the three makes featured in this article. For a country of just nine million to produce one automaker would be amazing enough. To lay claim to two automakers is simply phenomenal. Both Volvo and Saab are from this particular country which is Sweden. Now a part of Ford Motor Company, Volvo has greatly influenced the automobile industry over the years. Safety standards that had been universally low elsewhere are much more appreciated with Volvo. Front end crumple zones, reinforced roofs and specially designed interiors have all had their origin with Volvo. Out of these high safety standards have come a line of cars that are, indeed, some of the best built and safest cars on the road. Fortunately, through Volvo's leadership, many automakers around the world have incorporated Volvo's high safety standard. This is what makes Volvo exceptional in my eyes. The company that brought to the world the first people's car, the Beetle, is also exceptional. First designed in Germany during the 1930s, the Beetle survived World War II and was one of the most mass produced and loved cars in the world. From the 1950s forward the Beetle managed to make motorized transportation available to people who otherwise could not afford a car. From college students in the US to migrant workers in Mexico and from the gritty cities of Holland to the Irish farmlands, the Beetle made owning a car affordable the majority of the masses. Even after importation to the US ceased during the 1970s, the Beetle was produced for another generation and sold in Mexico.Without drawing out the point too far, the term that best describes Audi's quattro technology is "superior handling." Perhaps that is an understatement but when Audi introduced quattro all wheel drive the company threw the gauntlet down and told the rest of the auto making world that quattro was the standard by which all luxury sedans would be judged. Audi's quattro technology has given the company such a huge advantage over competitors that over the years it has been banned from certain types of racing. Indeed, Audi's quattro technology provides continuous traction long past when other road handling schematics have reached their threshold. So, there you have it. Three truly exceptional automobiles from the European continent, exceptional in ways, perhaps, that should be labeled as extraordinary.Matt Keegan writes for The Parts Bin, a retailer of high quality

How to Make Your Neon Car Lights look the Part!

Author : Antonio T Gabellone
It's one thing to grab a set of neon car lights and whack them on your vehicle, expecting them to work great, but the fact is, because you rushed the job to show your friends tonight, now their not working for some reason and there appears to be sparks flying out from under the dash, and on top of that, now your car won't start because you've shorted out the ignition! But on the other hand, as an experienced auto mechanic by trade and owner of All-Neon-Car-Lights.com I can tell you that if you only take your time when doing any kind of car customising, the end results will look so much better and they will work more efficiently too then if you just rush it.When it comes to gaining optimal performance from of your neon car lights, its best when installing them to consider the amount of glow that the light tubes are going to emit so as to be sure that nothing is going to block out the glow of the tubes. Meaning if your installing under car lights, then you'll want the tubes to be mounted "level" with the under carriage of the vehicle and not positioned too far up inside the under carriage where it will block most of the potential glow from your tubes, and also not to far down or else you'll loose the tubes on high ground if you have a low car. Also, many of the under car kits have special mounting brackets that allow you to "rotate" the tubes so you can direct the glow where you want. For example, you may want the glow to be directed straight towards the ground, or you may want to direct the light towards the outside of the vehicle, so that the glow is actually wider then the car. These neon car lights and their brackets have been made like this for that reason, so be sure to utilize them for best performance. For the interior car lights, well... only the limit of your imagination can stop you here! However, it's always good to mount these tubes in locations where they will not get repeatedly kicked or broken from people that get in and out of your vehicle and that they will not interfere with you while you're driving. That includes any interior tubes that may be mounted at the back of the car that could reflect in the "rear view" mirror at night, preventing you from seeing behind you because of the glare.Another good point to remember when installing your neon car lights for the best all round performance, is to "solder" all the wiring joints (if this is required for your type of installation) and seal the joints with duck tape or similar insulation tape to ensure a good connection and to prevent a voltage drop at connection point. If you hurry too much with the install and you only "twirl" the wires together, as a result, your neon lights will end up being too dull in brightness or even worse, they could cause a fire.Speaking of dull, unfortunately, some colors, whether you get LED or neon tubes, are naturally already dull due to the light color. Some of these colors include pink, aqua, and amber to name a few, so be sure to keep this in mind when choosing your desired color weather it be for the interior or exterior car lighting. One other major tip, and one that's often forgotten about when a person wants the best performance from their neon car lights, is if you've got neon under car lights, then over time, the tubes under the vehicle are going to get very dirty due to water, dirt, grease, oil and grime that comes off the roads, which in turn, blocks the glow of the lights. So when ever your meeting your friends out one night to show off your cool rides, always make it a habit to clean the tubes under the car when you wash your vehicle, that way, they will always be running at optimal brightness. Many of the online dealers for major Manufactures of neon car lights such as Plasmaglow, Streetglow, Liteglow and numerous other quality car light accessory makers will deliver the goods when it comes to best all round quality, durability and performance. However, be warned, if it's not a big brand name neon car light product, then you may be asking for trouble due to the lack of quality in some of the kit components, but this too, is not always the case.Hopefully these few little tips have inspired you to take your time when installing your car lighting accessories, or to maybe give your existing neon or LED car lights an overhaul to bring them alive again. What ever it is that this article has done for just, just be sure to have a good one, and enjoy your neon car lights at all times.Antonio Gabellone is the Owner/Author of All-Neon-Car-Lights.com - The Site is a great resource aimed at Neon Car Lights from PlasmaGlow with "life-time Warranties". Always Get a Lemon Check - 3 Reasons

Author : Mike Singh
Buying a used car can be a great way to save money, but it can also cost you a lot more if you end up buying a lemon. Having a lemon check prior to purchasing a used car is one of the most important things you can do, and too many people skip this step. Having the car inspected by an independent third party is one of the primary ways you can find out if something is wrong with the car. Believing whatever the seller tells you about the car is not enough, no matter how sincere or honest the person appears to be. After all, their motivation is to sell the car.The best place to have a lemon check performed is through a dealership that sells that make and model of car. Mechanics at the dealership are familiar with the parts, know how much repairs cost, and can inform you of any common problems with a particular model. It's worth spending the money to have the car inspected. If any repairs are needed, you can price the repairs and determine your best option, such as negotiating for a lower price or walking away.Having a used car inspected prior to purchase is probably the most important step in the process. Here are three good reasons why you should get a lemon check.1. You'll Learn More About the CarWhile a seller may be honest, it's possible that he or she is unaware of problems with the vehicle. Alternatively, it could be that the seller knows that repairs are needed and wants to sell the car rather than pay for repairs. Unfortunately, not everyone is honest, and the only way you can determine the true state of a car is to have it thoroughly inspected. A vehicle that looks great from the outside may have serious problems inside. A skilled, independent mechanic can give you an honest opinion about the state of the car.A lemon check can also alert you to other problems such as mileage fraud or other hidden problems with the car. If you run across any suspicious activity, such as adjusting mileage or other problems, you can walk away from the sale. If you skip having the lemon check, you will never know about these issues prior to purchasing the vehicle. In addition, conduct a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) search on the car to learn more about the car's history.2. Lemon LawsLemon laws protect consumers when they purchase a vehicle that has repeated problems immediately or very soon after purchase. Lemon laws vary by state, so you need to look up your state's laws to know what your rights are.Should you find that the vehicle you purchased is defective, a record of a mechanical check can work in your favor. This ensures that the seller cannot claim that the damage occurred after you purchased the vehicle. Obviously, if a mechanic determines that there are serious problems, you should avoid the car. However, if smaller issues are noted that later become bigger issues, you'll have a record that these were noted prior to purchase. Of course, this can work against you as well. If you learn that a car has significant problems, it's not worth the cost. The types of repairs may also have an effect on whether or not lemon laws apply. Safety issues are of more concern than minor repairs. Therefore, safety-related issues may require fewer repair attempts than others under certain lemon laws.Lemon laws apply to vehicles that require repeated repairs over a short amount of time. So even if you are aware of a needed fix, if the problem is not fixed with one or more repairs (sometimes up to four, depending on the state), you may be protected by lemon laws. Be sure to keep detailed records of all maintenance, beginning with the first lemon check and any repairs thereafter. Also, keep in mind that lemon laws only apply to vehicles that are used for family or personal use, at least part of the time. Vehicles used solely for business purposes do not fall under lemon laws, but other laws apply.3. You'll Save MoneyHaving a lemon check done on a potential purchase will only save you money in the long run. The check will determine whether you should invest in the vehicle to begin with, and will give you an idea of potential repairs and the estimated cost. Simply avoiding a lemon can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars, from the initial cost of the vehicle (that you won't be able to resell) to any repairs.Mike Singh is a successful webmaster of http://www.lemon-law-secrets.info. What Kind Of Car Lover Are You?

Author : Sue DeFiore
Chuck and I got involved in our first car club when we lived in Rochester and had our Corvette. We had a blast. Met a great bunch of people, did a ton of events. In fact I can still remember our first event. It was a car rally and Chuck and I got the second place trophy. However, like any group, we had cliques. Now, don't get mad at me for the monikers that are coming. They have been around a long time and I didn't make them up.All of the following groups love their cars, just each in a different way. First there are the polishers. Their cars are pristine. They will use toothbrushes to get their batteries cleaned.I mean you could eat a meal off their engines. You won't find a spec of dust on the outside, inside of their cars, and inside includes the engine and trunk. The racers, believe in a clean and polished car, however, their main concern is POWER. They want to get the most they can from their engines. It is all about having the fastest car!Funny aside, when Chuck and I went to the NCCC convention they were giving away a LT1 engine and when the polisher at our table won it, you had to hear the racers. We wished him the best, but told him we were jealous, and we were. Would have loved to put that baby in our Corvette. Then we have the groups who believe street rods, hot rods, muscle cars, or antiques are the way to go. There are also those who believe in all original, no changes. However, you also have another group that doesn't worry about it, as long as the car is what they want.We love a nice clean and polished car, while we would like matching numbers and all original, if an aftermarket part is warranted we will use it. To Chuck and I it is about having fun with the car. We want to drive it, not trailer it. However, we always have believed in the motto "to each his own" and respect other people's opinions. One thing we all have in common, is the love of cars and that is all that is important. So what group do you fall in? The History of Ferrari

Author : William Berg
When Enzo Ferrari created his company Scuderia Ferrari in Italy in 1929 his intentions was to sponsor amateur race car drivers and invent racing cars, and it would take more than 15 years before Ferrari began to create their own road cars in 1946. Ferrari is still devoted to the creation of racing cars and high performance sports cars and do not create other types of cars. Scuderia Ferrari is still the widespread name for Gestione Sportiva, the part of the Ferrari company that works with racing. Scuderia is an Italian word and means "stable", but Scuderia Ferrari is sometime also translated as Team Ferrari.During the early years, Scuderia Ferrari sponsored race car drivers that were driving Alfa Romeo cars. Scuderia Ferrari would prepare Alfa Romeo cars before the race, and in 1938 Enzo Ferrari became officially employed by Alfa Romeo's racing department. Two years later Enzo Ferrari found out that Alfa Romeo was planning to absorb Scuderia Ferrari, a plan which Enzo Ferrari strongly opposed. He instantly left his job at Alfa Romeo, but his contract restricted him from being involved with racing for several years. He changed Scuderia Ferrari into "Auto Avio Costruzioni Ferrari" and officially manufactured aircraft accessories for a few years. Enzo Ferrari did however create a race car during this restricted period. The Tipo 815 debuted at the Mille Miglia race in 1940, but the race was hampered due to World War II and Tipo 815 encountered no real competition. In 1943 Enzo Ferrari moved his factory to Maranello in Italy and one year later the factory was bombed. After the end of World War II, Enzo Ferrari rebuilt his factory and now the Ferrari factory was capable of construction road cars as well.Ferrari constructed its first road car in 1947. The 1947 125 S Ferrari had a 1.5 L V12 engine and the whole car was considered very beautiful and well designed. Enzo Ferrari was still more interested in race cars and the Ferrari road cars was merely a way for him to fund his work with the Scuderia Ferrari. His distaste for the road car customers became famous and he even accused them of buying Ferrari cars only as status symbols. It is true that the Ferrari road cars grow to fame not only due to excellent performance but also thanks to their stylish elegance. Pininfarina, Bertone, Ghia, Scagliette, Touring and Vignale are all examples of design houses that have worked with Ferrari. In November 1961 a dispute between Enzo Ferrari and his sales manager, Girolamo Gardini, turned into a crisis. Girolamo Gardini threatened to leave the company. Enzo Ferrari responded to the threat by throwing out Girolamo Gardini, and several employees who agreed with Girolamo Gardini were also ousted. Among them were Romolo Tavoni, manager for Scuderia Ferrari, Giotto Bizzarrini, the chief of the experimental sports car development, and Carlo Chiti, the chief engineer. This was naturally a huge loss for the Ferrari company and the crisis deepened when those who had been thrown out formed their own company – Automobili Turismo e Sport (ATS). ATS even managed to take over Scuderia Serenissima, a very successful racing team, from Ferrari.A younger engineer, Mauro Forghieri, and an experienced racing bodyman, Sergio Scaglietti, assumed responsibility and tried to finish the projects that the leaving employees had left behind. One of the most important tasks was to finish the development of 250 GTO; a new 250-based model that could compete with the Jaguar E-type. The 250 GTO was finished in time to participate in the Sebring race and place itself first in class, driven by Phil Hill. Throughout 1962, the 250 GTO continued to win the races and it is still one of the most well known race cars in history. The crisis turned out to be something good for Ferrari and the 1960s became a very good decade for the company.Until the 1980s when Ferrari began to use fuel injection in the road cars, the Ferraris were known as rather temperamental cars. They could be very unreliable, but would still attract a large group of dedicated fans that viewed this unpredictability as "character" rather than a problem. Today, FIAT controls 56 percent of the Ferrari stocks. The rest of stocks owned by Enzo's con Piero Ferrari and by Commerzbank, Mediobanca and the Lehman Brothers. Maranello is still the home town for Ferrari.Another dream car for many is the Hummer. The History of the Hummer is much shorter than the history of Ferrari and GM is just releasing their third Hummer model, the Hummer 3. A new more family friendly Hummer that will be very customizable just like the other hummer models with the help of a Hummer accessory or two.

Longtime Carbon Monoxide Eliminator for Chrysler Vehicles Re-Examined: The Catalytic Converter

Author : Joe Wayne
Catalytic converters, the longtime companion of Chrysler vehicles in trimming down their carbon monoxide emissions, have been getting a lot of buzz this week. News about catalytic converters giving off toxic metals must have been the reason for all of this noise. Add to that the heightened alarm brought by news about carbon monoxide poisoning. Because of these recent events, we have found it necessary to review once again the role that Chrysler catalytic converters play for Chrysler vehicles.

Catalytic converters are emissions-control products designed to reduce or to clean up the harmful exhaust emissions in gasoline-powered vehicles. Since 1975, most new gasoline-powered vehicles, including Chrysler petrol-powered vehicles, have been equipped with catalytic converters. So far, the invention has been functioning well. In fact, a majority of the catalytic converters installed in vehicles today can efficiently reduce vehicle carbon monoxide emissions by as much as 80 percent.

There are many types of catalytic converters. Among those that can be seen often in Chrysler vehicles is the three-way catalytic converter. Three-way catalytic converters got their name from the fact that they are designed to reduce three types of harmful engine emissions—carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide. Because of this, the structure of these converters are quite complex although easy to understand.

Three-way catalytic converters are made up of two catalysts: the oxidation catalyst and the reduction catalyst. The reduction catalyst is usually made from platinum and rhodium and its main function is to convert nitrogen oxide emissions into less harmful products like nitrogen and oxygen. The oxidation catalyst, on the other hand, is made up of platinum and palladium. This catalyst is responsible for converting carbon monoxide and the other hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide. With both the oxidation and the reduction catalysts present in a single emissions-control product, three-way catalytic converters can efficiently filter out the engine's exhausts and convert them to less harmful substances.

Because of their importance in controlling emission levels in vehicles, Chrysler catalytic converters have long been used as standard components for Chrysler vehicles. Aside from these original components, there are also aftermarket Chrysler catalytic converters that may be used as replacements to the original equipment.

Among those companies that continuously provide Chrysler owners with solutions for all of their Chrysler catalytic converter needs is Auto Parts Wholesale.

How to Ensure the Right Truck Rental for Your Move

Author : John Mancini
Moving a long distance generally requires the use of a specific type of truck. Most commonly, when people move they require the use of a cargo truck, however, most people do not own one of these. For much of the moving population, the answer is the use of a truck rental. Before you even begin to look into renting a moving truck, there are some things that need to be considered. When you are ready to reserve the truck, it is best to avoid the busy times, thus allowing yourself the widest range of vehicles and options to choose from. Try to avoid the end and the beginning of a month, most leases end and start at these times; avoiding them will help ensure that the vehicle you want will be there for you. Finally, before you pull out of the parking lot after renting the truck, ask if there are directions available for the use of the vehicle. If there are, be sure to read them. If possible, try to get someone from the rental company to personally show you anything that you will need to know to complete your trip safely.Once you know the approximate size of the truck you will need, you can then start to call rental companies to inquire about the sizes they have available for you. Some of the most common sizes that may need to be reserved early are the cargo van and the small cargo trucks.First and foremost, you need to figure out how much space you will need. Preparing Your Car for Winter Storage

Author : Jason Helferich
With the show and racing season wrapped up and the temperature beginning to drop, it is time to start thinking about what you are going to do with your ride. Many of you will drive your car over the winter months; many others will store your car for the winter. Information on storing your car will not apply to all, especially those in the sunny southern states. However, if you plan to store your car during the winter months, this is a must read.CleaningGetting your vehicle clean now will be much easier than after it has sat for a few months. Clean the car completely. A thorough clean will include the interior, exterior, undercarriage and under the hood. Any dirt that has accumulated on the vehicle will be much easier to remove now than after it has set for several months. Starting with the interior, be sure to vacuum, dust, and clean everything. The cleaner the car is, the better it will handle storage. Make sure you thoroughly wash the undercarriage. The dirt left on the undercarriage will rust or corrode metal parts while in storage. Cleaning the exhaust thoroughly, especially chrome or stainless exhaust tips will help to keep it from corroding. Once you are done with the undercarriage, it is time to move on to the exterior. Wash the vehicle. Washing can be a daunting task but in the end, it will be worth it. Once the car is clean, give it the best wax job it has ever seen. Wax everywhere there is paint - your car will love you for it. Polish any chrome on the car to keep it preserved over the winter months. Go over the vehicle and make sure it is completely dry before putting it away. Any moisture that remains will corrode metal parts while the vehicle is in storage.Maintenance/PreparationPreventative maintenance will help prepare your car for sitting over the winter. You should change the following fluids:• Engine Oil
• Brake Fluid
• Coolant
• Washer Fluid
• Clutch FluidThe next step in preparing your car for storage is to change the engine oil and filter. As soon as a vehicle is driven after an oil change, small amounts of condensation begin showing up inside the engine. If the vehicle is not being driven, this moisture increases the risk of rust on internal engine parts. By changing the oil prior to storage, you will minimize the moisture in the system. You should be sure to use synthetic oil, as it has enhanced coating properties and does not break down as easy as regular oil.You should then top off your gas tank. Since most gas tanks are metal, by filling up the gas you will not allow moisture to form from the gas vapors which can cause corrosion. A fuel stabilizer should also be used, as gasoline can break down over an extended period of time.Next, disconnect the battery. If the car will be stored for an extended period of time, remove it completely. Age and low temperatures in the winter can cause batteries to crack, thus subjecting your engine bay to battery acid. You should also use some type of battery maintainer or battery tender. These devices connect to your battery terminals and will provide the battery a continuous and consistent charge. Battery maintainers will shut down periodically to prevent overcharging. Vehicles have electrical accessories that can use battery power even when the car is not running and will run the battery dead. Battery maintainers can extend the life of the battery in your stored car.You have a few options on how to protect the tires. You can jack up the car and place it on jack stands, coat the tires in lithium grease, or over inflate the tires. By placing the vehicle on jack stands it will prevent the tires from developing flat spots and it also reduces the strain on suspension bushings and other parts. Another option is to coat the tires in lithium grease. This is done to prevent the tires from drying out, cracking or developing leaks. You should not use petroleum based lubricants, such as Vaseline or Armor All, because they will eventually dry out and will actually dry and crack the tires. Lastly, by over inflating the tires you will prevent them from developing flat spots.Use a silicone lubricant or lithium grease to coat the weather stripping and door seals. This will preserve these seals over the storage period. Also, make sure you lubricate the door hinges, door latches, door locks and the hood and trunk latches as well. If these latches lose their lubrication, they will become difficult to open.Your next concern is critters, such as mice or other vermin that can get into your car and destroy it. You should plug your tail pipe with aluminum foil or steel wool to protect it from mice getting into it. You may also want to do the same on your intake, depending on its design. You should roll up all the windows on the vehicle and also keep the doors, trunk, and hood closed to eliminate pressure on the hinges and keep out critters. Convertible owners should leave the top up, as it will keep the cover stretched. Another measure is to place packets of silica in the interior and trunk of the car to keep the areas free of moisture. Manual transmission cars should be left in gear, as this will eliminate the possibility of shift rod corrosion. Lastly, no matter what you do, DO NOT APPLY THE PARKING BRAKE! By leaving the brake engaged, the shoes can freeze to the drum, making it difficult to free them.Storage facilitiesStoring the car in a fully climate controlled building is the best choice. Unfortunately, this is not possible for most people. However, there are other options. Storing your car in a building without climate control can be equally efficient, but you must take the proper precautions. If the storage area you are using has concrete floors, placing carpet over the concrete will keep moisture away from the underside of the car. Concrete holds plenty of moisture and the carpet will help keep it away from the bottom of your car. It is suggested to at least cover the length of the car, but you can also carpet the entire concrete floor. Another option is to buy a plastic sheet or tarp and use it for the same purpose. You can use an outside carport, but make sure you have protection from all sides against wind. Car covers can be used, but you must be very careful and consider the conditions the car will be subjected to outdoors. If it is in an area where it may experience a lot of wind, you have to make sure the cover is tight so that wind cannot flap the material as this can wear painted surfaces. If you know anyone who has owned an improperly tightened front-end bra, unfortunately they will be able to tell you all about this. The most important feature you should look for in a car cover is that it is made of a breathable material. If moisture is trapped between the cover and the car, the breathable fabric will allow it evaporate quickly. If you store your car outside, check to make sure that no moisture (from rain or melting snow) is allowed to accumulate under the vehicle or between the car and the cover. A car cover protects your car from light, dust, and the accidental bump. It will do this whether the car is stored indoors or outdoors. It should be noted the information contained in this article applies to short-term storage. Short term storage is a period of several months, not to be confused with long term storage, which lasts for a period of several years. Vehicles stored long term need to have much more in-depth preparations than those described here.Whether you follow these steps or not when storing your vehicle, it is important that you have a plan that will eliminate the four biggest problems of storage (light, moisture, temperature extremes, and vermin). By doing so, you will ensure that your car will not only look like it did prior to storage, but even possibly like the day you bought it… and hopefully for many years to come.Jason Helferich

Do More Than Just Cover Your Honda Wheels

Author : Joe Thompson
Out in the market today are many types of wheel covers specifically made for your beloved Honda. Honda wheel covers actually do more for your Honda than just cover your wheels.Wheel covers are commonly mixed up with hubcaps. However, looking more closely at these two, wheel covers cover the entire wheel of your vehicle, while, on the other hand, hubcaps, cover only the hub, or the center of your wheel. These wheel covers are made from tough material – they are created and manufactured using plastic or metal retainers, so as to facilitate better and easier fastening to your Honda wheels. They are clipped on your vehicle's wheel to accentuate your wheels and, at the same time, protect it from mud, grime, snow, dirt, water, and other elements that could prove to be damaging or corrosive to your wheels.Honda wheel covers are not necessarily considered a requirement for your car, however, they can actually improve your wheels' appearance greatly. You see, wheel covers have been created to cover your entire wheel and conceal from view the ugly bolts that attach your wheel to its axle. And along that line, it adds distinction and uniqueness to your Honda wheels to your Honda's overall appearance. In choosing your wheel covers, you may opt for those that have been especially manufactured and created to be durable, lightweight, able to withstand really extreme and excessive temperatures, and also created to be resistant to corrosion. Wheel covers that had been made just merely for decorative purposes may actually damage easily and damage your wheels as well.Auto Parts DiscountHonda wheel coversJoe Thompson is the owner of a successful auto body shop in Ferndale, California. Oil Change Industry Predictions for 2006

Author : Lance Winslow
The oil change industry in 2005 saw many changes and emerging trends. Competition is getting a little tougher in both large and smaller regional markets. Wal-Mart Super Centers are challenging price points. Labor and technician shortages are troubling and turnover rates are killing franchise and chain operators as costs of oil, supplies and materials rise, while regulation increases and price points fall. 2005 did not see the predicted problems associated with hybrids and fuel cell cars, which would not need oil changes that many industry analysts had feared. One trend we will continue to see is Auto Dealers will do more in-house services such as oil changes due to the trend of AutoMakers to offer free-maintenance and specialty oil to help them comply with further tightening of emissions regulations. Daimler Chrysler for instance is now offering free fuel for two-years and free maintenance for as long as you own the vehicle if you buy a new Jeep. Other AutoMakers will follow and match such deals. Meaning the oil changes will be done where they are free, at the dealership and not the independent oil change shop or franchise oil change chain outlet. BMW now has specialty oil, as do other AutoMakers that must be used to uphold the warranty and offers free oil changes as well. Free will continue to be the consumers favorite price and extremely hard to compete against, as was the $12.95 oil change price point of the past few years offered by Wal-Mart Super Centers. Car Accident Injuries

Author : Eric Morris
Car accidents can result in extensive injuries such as spinal cord injuries, kneecap injuries, broken bones, and shock related minor injuries. Many severe car accidents can even result in death due to head injuries or shock. Knee injuries sometimes never heal and can be fatal in cases of severe damage to the knee during the accident. Most car accidents are results of reckless driving, fast or inattentive driving, or driving under the influence of alcohol. Many drivers do not concentrate on the road while driving, which could prove to be very dangerous on highways or residential streets. Playing pranks on other drivers on the road, like teenager sometimes do, can prove to be harmful since it distracts the driver. Drivers who are more interested in paying attention to everything other than the road are quite dangerous and unpredictable. Passing other cars without proper signaling can be another cause of accidents and side collisions.Another main cause for inattentiveness while driving is talking on a mobile phone. Even though many opt for hands free head phones, the best option would be not to receive the call while driving or better yet, pull over to the side of the road and stop the car before attending to the call. Although many states consider using a mobile phone to be illegal while driving, some people ignore the law and talk while driving anyway.Severe accidents such as pileups can result in deaths and severe injuries. It pays to be cautious while driving in the fast lanes of highways as a minor mistake might result in extensive damage to oneself and others on the road.Car accidents caused due to faulty cars and rollovers can cause extensive injuries. Skidding cars might prove to be quite treacherous to other cars coming up behind. It is a good option to research on the rollover and skid statistics of different cars before investing in one.Car Accidents provides detailed information about car accidents, car accident injuries, car accident lawsuits, and more. Where To Find Nissan Parts

Author : Vincent Abrugar
Nissan parts are a very important part of Nissan cars. Since the company's inception in 1933, many sleek, powerful and affordable automobiles have come off of the production line. Just as there have been quality Nissan cars, there have been Nissan parts manufactured to fit them.Every auto part that is purchased for Nissan cars will ultimately play a large role in the way that the automobile looks and operates. Nissan cars should always be repaired using authentic Nissan parts. From hoods to hubcaps, mirrors to spoilers and even wheels, Nissan cars feature a sleek design combined with affordable pricing.Without quality Nissan parts, the performance of Nissan cars would not be the same. Quality, workmanship and dependability are all a part of what Nissan puts into their manufacturing. If you own a Nissan car that needs repair, it is recommended that you take it to an auto parts garage that offers Nissan parts. A specialized Nissan dealer would be ideal but, if there isn't one in your area, any garage or body shop should be able to place a special order for the Nissan parts that are needed. Before having any work done, ask the repair specialist about pricing on Nissan parts. Get an estimate, for both parts and labor, in writing before making a final decision on who will repair your car. If necessary, stop by more than one garage and inquire about repairing or replacing auto parts for Nissan cars. It's very important to get a qualified repair specialist to perform any type of work on your automobile. Ask any questions that you feel are important when considering the purchase of Nissan parts and/or repair. As is the case with most quality products, Nissan parts often carry a warranty on their operation. It's a good idea to inquire about these warranties before purchasing. Once the purchase is made and the Nissan parts are installed, it's a good idea to keep all warranty paperwork tucked away in a safe place for later retrieval. In addition, the garage that installed the Nissan parts may offer a warranty on their work. Be sure to inquire about this, as well, and keep any additional paperwork relating to the purchase or installation of your new Nissan parts.Nissan cars are extremely popular among auto enthusiasts. Some are known for their classic family design while others are manufactured with a sports car theme. No matter the design on Nissan cars, one thing is for certain. A company that has been in business for this many years is here to stay and, if Nissan cars are any reflection on the company that manufactures them, they are here to stay as well.Vincent Abrugar is the webmaster of http://www.nissaninfo.com a website about nissan parts.

Should You Get An Extended Auto Warranty?

Author : Grant Davis
Are you considering an extended new car warranty or used car warranty? Are you uncertain of the value of purchasing such a warranty? It is important to understand that an extended automobile warranty gives protection beyond the dealership warranty. On top of other features and benefits, an extended warranty allows you the flexibility to have your vehicle repaired at any licensed service center in your area.In addition to repairing mechanical breakdowns, these extended warranty benefits and options are likely to include:
a) 24 hour Roadside Assistance up to $100 for a specified number of occurrences,
b) Car rental benefits if the car is towed to a repair facility,
c) Trip interruption benefits,
d) Additional towing,
e) Other services such as lock out, replacement of oil, or other fluids, and battery boosts.Car buyers often know nothing about auto warranties. They think they are getting a magic golden wand that will pay for anything that goes wrong. Not true!Read the fine print, as even with the best extended auto warranty service plan, there are exclusions to what is covered. Often you will find so many items excluded from the warranty repair that you will wonder what exactly is covered other than the perks of roadside assistance, car rental, and other emergency services. Many websites give tips on how to buy an extended auto warranty online. Investigate carefully, but remember many companies sell warranties. Don't buy from the first company you investigate.Check out several, making sure the one you settle on is a financially secure company that administers their own warranties and keeps high enough balances to pay all repair expenses that stretch into the future. Some places where you may obtain warranties from are warranty brokers, and insurance groups. While your car dealership may offer an extended car warranty, it is often in your best interest to purchase it elsewhere as the dealership many times will employ the warranty as a means to increase their profit by including it in the financing of the vehicle. This translates to your paying interest on the warranty, increasing your overall costs than if you purchase the warranty from an outside company.Check a credit union, other insurance dealers, or internet sources for their deals on extended car warranties. Buyers usually can negotiate the price of a warranty. A rule of thumb is that buyers may have a margin of one-third to negotiate the warranty. However, the less age and mileage your vehicle has, the less an extended warranty will cost. Before you buy, read service contracts with the manufacture's warranty. These often provide coverage for three years or 36,000 miles or whichever comes first. If you regularly trade your new car every three years, you most likely will never need a new car extended warranty as new cars tend to be fairly trouble free during the beginning years. However, if you're unlucky in life, love, and automobiles, then purchasing a new car warranty would be a smart move.Grant Davis is a freelance writer and has worked in a variety of fields, including teaching.
