What do doctors, nurses, teachers, and hairstylists all have in common? Well, besides the fact that they all wield sharp instruments, they also engage in systematic and consistent continuous education. In fact, most professions require some continuous education to keep their licenses. Many successful companies recognize the importance of career development and require a personal development plan (PDP) as part of their performance review. If continuous education and career development is a requirement to keep current in a professional setting, it's a wise investment to spend time in continuous education for your personal life.Having a personal development program encourages your mental fitness and ensures your future success. Just as physical fitness results in a healthy body, mental fitness results in a healthy mind. You need a "daily brain workout" to make sure you attain and maintain top mental fitness.Reading is a good way to begin your continuous education. There are many experts in a variety of fields who've written their advice on how to succeed at what you want to do. Take advantage of their real-life experience and read their book! Think of this: if you spend one hour a day reading a book, you will have absorbed 50 books in one year!Listening to audio programs is another way for people to learn, especially if they are in their cars a lot for business. Make good use of that time by playing a good personal development CD while you travel.Take a course or attend a seminar at least once a year. Many cities are host to personal development seminars where you can learn from the experts. If that's not an option, many community colleges have courses that are targeted to people who are interested in personal development but don't want to enroll in the college.Brian Tracy, motivational author of "The Psychology of Selling", says that you should be prepared to invest 3% of your earnings for personal and professional development. It makes sense to invest in yourself first if you want to achieve success. But if money is tight, a good local library often has all the resources you need for personal development. How to beginFirst, decide what it is you want to develop in your life. Is it being a successful salesperson? Getting out of debt? Improving your relationships? Once you decide, write out a plan for how you are going to do it. Research the resources you need and include a specific list of the books you want to read in the order you are going to be reading (or listening) to them. Then, schedule your personal development time, just like you schedule your physical workout. If you can do more than an hour, great! But commit to at least an hour every day. Finally, develop some sort of reward system for finishing your book. And then start on the next book. Realize that improved circumstances will be the end result of your personal development journey.Eunice Coughlin is the founder of http://www.healthy-living-for-moms.com, a resource for moms of all ages and stages who seek spiritual and physical health and wellness.
